Seedance 2.0: A Potential Disruptor for Hollywood
Recently, the Chinese AI video generation model Seedance 2.0 was released and quickly gained popularity worldwide, with industry experts stating it could “completely change the future of film production.” Several directors and producers in the U.S. believe this model can generate “movie-quality” videos quickly and at low costs, possessing the potential to disrupt Hollywood. Although some American Hollywood guilds have accused the model of “infringement,” experts argue that the march of new technological tools is unstoppable.
Industry Attention
According to a statement from ByteDance, the Seedance 2.0 model uses a dual-branch diffusion transformer architecture to create movie-quality videos based on text or images. Users only need to write detailed prompts or upload an image to generate a multi-shot sequence video with native audio in 60 seconds.
Notably, the model’s unique multi-shot narrative feature can automatically generate multiple interconnected scenes from a single prompt. It also maintains consistency in characters, visual style, and atmosphere across scene transitions without manual editing.
The model is designed for professional film, e-commerce, and advertising scenarios, capable of processing text, images, audio, and video content simultaneously, significantly reducing the production costs of high-quality video content.
The e-commerce vertical search engine BigGo’s financial channel stated that many industry insiders regard Seedance 2.0 as “the strongest video generation model globally.” German tech blogger Timothy Meixner released a review video noting that unlike previous models focused on “text-to-video,” Seedance 2.0 allows users to combine multiple input sources in highly flexible ways for more targeted content creation.
Several American directors and producers shared their experiences testing Seedance 2.0 on social media, sparking a discussion about its potential to “disrupt Hollywood.” American documentary director Charles Cullen mentioned that he created a 1 minute and 24 seconds live-action movie trailer using Seedance 2.0 in just 20 minutes for $60, praising its movie-level visual effects, precise audio-video synchronization, and professional multi-camera shooting capabilities, stating it could “possibly disrupt Hollywood.”
Elon Musk commented on Seedance 2.0 on social media, saying, “It’s developing too fast.” Brett Stewart, head of AI film production at the avant-garde creative group Staircase Studio, also remarked that Seedance 2.0 could “completely change the future of film production.”
Industry insiders in the U.S. pointed out that the release of Seedance 2.0 could mark a turning point in video content creation. Following the widespread application of large language models focused on text generation, large models dedicated to generating video and images are seen as the next stage in AI technology development. While it was previously believed that breakthroughs in this field would take another two to three years, the launch of Seedance 2.0 indicates that this moment has arrived sooner than expected.
Technological Progress is Inevitable
According to Variety magazine, the American Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the Motion Picture Association, and the “Human Art Movement” formed by various artist rights organizations from Hollywood guilds voiced concerns in mid-February, accusing Seedance 2.0 of “infringement.”
Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance’s chief legal counsel John Rogovin on February 13, accusing the company of “stealing characters from Disney’s Star Wars, Marvel, and other franchises, as if Disney’s cherished intellectual property were free public domain clip art.” Notably, Disney has agreed to license its characters to the U.S. OpenAI Research Center for its video generation model “Sora 2.” Public opinion generally views the emergence of Seedance 2.0 as a significant challenge to “Sora 2,” potentially threatening its survival.
In fact, after the Google search engine was officially launched on September 4, 1998, it also created significant waves. Traditional media once insisted that the engine was “siphoning off” their resources, but ultimately could not resist the new tool’s ability to conquer the world.
Now, the future is here, and the impact of AI is unavoidable. Especially as major AI companies advance interactive video and audio generation models, products are becoming increasingly mature, with Seedance 2.0 marking a significant milestone in the overall technological breakthrough process.
Julia Pierpont, a veteran journalist covering Hollywood film news, believes that historically, any true technological revolution will touch upon existing patterns and interests, creating a new era. It dilutes the interests of some while benefiting many, thus driving society forward.
Pierpont explains that, based on its product characteristics, Seedance 2.0 likely underwent intensive training using a vast amount of Hollywood film works. Given that the material library and copyright are the foundation of Hollywood giants, their concerns are understandable. However, from another perspective, independent film production companies or creators in the U.S. are likely to welcome the widespread adoption of Seedance 2.0, as it significantly lowers the barriers and costs of creation, especially for special effects, while also improving the quality of works. The opposing positions of independent companies and large corporations on this issue are evident.
Pierpont cautions that when Google faced legal challenges, it adopted a strategy of clarifying that it was merely a creative platform and tool, not a content provider or creator; if there were infringement claims, they should be directed at the users of the platform and tools, not the platform and tool providers themselves.
